Welcome
EU Multimedia Repository on Science
The EMRS project is funded through the Sixth European Framework Programme (FP6-2002-Lifescihealth, Specific Support Actions, LSH 2002-0.0.0.1). EMRS organises focus meetings and produces informative films that will be made available for viewing from this website. The internet facilities of the European Multimedia Repository of Science project have been integrated into the EUSEM initiative, which can be reached from the site map on the left.
Information on EUSEM can be found here. Further sources on science issues are in the resource section or among the continuously updated news items. The network section provides a possibility to consult experts for your science related quesions. For all other questions please contact the EUSEUM management team.
Project summary
Life sciences and in particular genomics for health holds promise to improve the quality of life in our society. Because of the complexity of the field and the considerable background knowledge required, the balance between benefits and risks are not easily explained or evident to the general public nor to educators. This may lead to public concerns and even public rejection of technologies that hold promise to improve quality of life for members of our society.
Constructive dialogue is one of the keys to minimise unfounded concerns and maximise public empowerment on these complex issues. The main objective of this project is to better inform the public and professionals in educational organisations. The European Multimedia Repository of Science (EMRS) makes a strong effort to bring the scientific world closer to three chosen key stakeholders: the general public, educators and media. EMRS addresses European co-ordinated LifeSciHealth scientific activities in the general area of advanced genomics and its application for health. The chosen stakeholders are reached by the use of effective communication platforms that offer high impact value: video, multimedia, television, internet and publishers.
The main deliverables of the project are high quality short films. Typical issues covered in the films will include knowledge creation, innovation, exploitation, benefits, risks as well as social and ethical concerns. There are three levels of disseminating the film contents: i) television broadcasts ii) on-line internet based multimedia library and iii) direct distribution of videos, CD-ROMs or DVDs. An internet based Rapid Response Science Network, two Focus Meetings and a reference book complement these efforts.
